MR. ISMAY: The ship was specially constructed so that she would float with any two compartments full of water. I think I am right in saying that there are very few ships — perhaps I had better not say that, but I will continue, now that I have begun it — I believe there are very few ships to-day of which the same can be said. When we built the Titanic we had that especially in mind. If this ship had hit the iceberg stem on, in all human probability she would have been here to-day.
SENATOR SMITH: If she had hit the iceberg head on, in all probability she would be here now?
MR. ISMAY: I say in all human probability that ship would have been afloat to-day.
SENATOR NEWLANDS: How did the ship strike the iceberg?
MR. IsmAY: From information I have received, I think she struck the iceberg a glancing blow between the end of the forecastle and the captain's bridge, just aft of the foremast, sir.
SENATOR SMITH: I understood you to say a little while ago that you were rowing, with your back to the ship. If you were rowing and going away from the ship, you would naturally be facing the ship, would you not?
MR. ISMAY: No; in these boats some row facing the bow of the boat and some facing the stern. I was seated with my back to the man who was steering, so that I was facing away from the ship.
SENATOR SMITH: You have stated that the ship was specially constructed so that she could float with two compartments filled with water?
MR. ISMAY: Yes.
SENATOR SMITH: Is it your idea, then, that there were no two compartments left entire?
MR. ISMAY: That I can not answer, sir. I am convinced that more than two compartments were filled. As I tried to explain to you last night, I think the ship's bilge was ripped open.
SENATOR NEWLANDS: The ship had 16 compartments?
MR. ISMAY: I could not answer that, sir.
SENATOR NEWLANDS: Approximately?
MR. ISMAY: Approximately. That information is absolutely at your disposal. Our shipbuilders will give it to you accurately.

Je pense avoir raison de dire qu’il y a très peu de navires — il vaut peut-être mieux que je ne le dise pas, mais je vais continuer, maintenant que j’ai commencé — je crois qu’il y a très peu de navires aujourd’hui dont on peut dire la même chose. Lorsque nous avons construit le Titanic, nous avions cela en tête. Si ce vaisseau avait heurté l’iceberg de face, selon toute probabilité, il aurait été là aujourd’hui.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Si il avait frappé l’iceberg de front, il serait probablement ici maintenant?
M. ISMAY : Je dis que, selon toute probabilité, le navire aurait été à flot aujourd’hui.
LE SÉNATEUR NEWLANDS : Comment le navire a-t-il heurté l’iceberg?
M. ISMAY : D’après les informations que j’ai reçues, je pense qu’il a heurté l’iceberg d’un coup franc entre l’extrémité du gaillard d’avant et la passerelle du capitaine, juste derrière le mât avant, monsieur.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Je vous ai entendu dire tout à l’heure que vous étiez en train de ramer, le dos au navire. Si vous étiez en train de ramer et de partir du navire, vous seriez naturellement face au navire, n’est-ce pas?
M. ISMAY : Non; dans ces bateaux, une rangée face à l’avant du bateau et une autre face à l’arrière. J’étais assis, le dos tourné vers l’homme qui dirigeait, de sorte que je faisais face loin du navire.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Vous avez dit que le navire avait été spécialement construit pour pouvoir flotter avec deux compartiments remplis d’eau?
M. ISMAY : Oui.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Pensez-vous donc qu’il n’y avait pas que deux compartiments entiers?
M. ISMAY : Je ne peux pas répondre à cette question, monsieur. Je suis convaincu que plus de deux compartiments ont été remplis. Comme j’ai essayé de vous l’expliquer hier soir, je pense que la cale du navire a été éventrée.
LE SÉNATEUR NEWLANDS : Le navire avait 16 compartiments?
M. ISMAY : Je ne pourrais pas répondre à cette question, monsieur.
